Message from the Captains

Welcome to Mahee.

Mahee Island Golf Club is synonymous with spectacular scenery, an immaculately maintained course and a welcoming, friendly ambience. The first of these was created by nature; the second is nurtured by incredibly dedicated green keepers and the last emanates from a membership that prides itself in being part of the Mahee family. We are very fortunate to enjoy one of the best locations in the country, but the strength of the Club lies, not in nature, but in the people who enjoy the Course, each other’s company and their golf in equal proportions.

So what does this year hold in store for us? Many will dream of continuing good form, a voucher or two and perhaps our name on the prize list at the end of the season. But, to paraphrase JFK, “Ask not what your Club can do for you; ask what you can do for your Club.” Get involved in one of the GUI teams, help with the Juveniles or if there is something that needs doing, just do it. Your Club needs you.

Every Club relies on the dedication of both employees and members to help it develop. We are indebted to the office bearers and members of Council for the time and effort they voluntarily give to help run the Club. We would be lost without the services of Colin, Jean and Mark, and the Course would be nothing without the lavish attentions of Wilson, Alastair and Timothy. We are grateful for all their efforts on our behalf.

Last year’s Captain Robert Wright was, and continues to be, an example to us all. I hope that I can do half as well in 2014 and feel confident of the support of all who make up the family that is Mahee.

Ladies of Mahee,

I wish to thank you wholeheartedly for electing me as Lady Captain for 2013 and with a mixture of excitement and trepidation I look forward to the incoming year.

The committee works as a team on behalf of all the members so that we can enjoy our golf and Mahee. This year has seen major changes in personnel; Yvonne Revill taking on the role of Secretary, Carrie Spence that of Handicap & Competition Secretary and we welcome Pauline Maguire and Hilary McHenry to our ranks. Along with out Lady President, Jean Rodgers and Vice Captain, Barbara Martin we will endeavour to do our best for you.

The changes that have taken place at Mahee in relationship to course management and landowner should not have any effect on the everyday running of the Club. There will be regular meetings with the new Mahee Island Golf Course Ltd and the Lady Captain will now be directly involved in these.

As to the future, my best wishes go to all our teams - thanks to those who have taken on the role of Captain, it will be worth the effort! Well done to all those who took part in the Winter Alliance this year and especially the ladies who played at Mahee in February pulling back the deficit to be just piped to the post by Spa.

My Captain’s day will be on 21st June - hopefully in glorious sunshine and our outing is to Galgorm on Thursday 8th August.

Mahee is a special place, the “Star of the County Down”. Sometimes I can forget how special until friends come to play and are blown away by its atmosphere. Our green keepers, Wilson and Alistair and steward Colin, and caterer Mark all play their part in the welcome visitors find at Mahee.

My prayer for all this year is good friendship, good golf and most of all good health to enjoy Mahee!
