Message from the Captains

Dear Members,

As we look forward to another golfing year at Mahee I wish you all every success both on and off the course. We should all feel privileged to be able to play golf in one of the most picturesque situations in the country. Why not take time this year to pause and appreciate the surroundings?

To paraphrase a famous quotation, I want to encourage all our members to “Ask not what your club can do for you, ask what you can do for your club.” What we can do is to show respect to other members, and the course, by observing golf etiquette – avoid slow play, replace divots, repair pitch marks, etc. In addition, during the current financial climate, we can promote Mahee at every opportunity. Invite visitors, welcome new members and bring to Mahee any Society of which you are a member. You might even consider sponsorship or suggest potential sponsors. We are most grateful to all the companies who sponsor our tees and were delighted when Pelican Healthcare decided to invest in new scorecards.

The GUI’s decision, to alter the Standard Scratch Score of Mahee, has resulted in most of our handicaps drifting upwards. Therefore our teams have been more competitive in inter-club competitions. Team Captains will be asked to look closely at Saturday competitions over the new season and select in-form players within the handicap range of their team. Members who have not been involved in teams should keep an eye on the notice boards in the clubhouse for further details. We look forward to continued success and are delighted to host the Pierce Purcell Shield qualifying event on Sunday May 13th 2012. Thanks to Wilson Gaw and Alistair Smith for their hard work in preparing the course, not only for special events, but all year round.

There will be an exciting programme from the Social committee and I ask that you make every effort to attend these events. I wish to acknowledge the efforts of Mark Spence, the club caterer, and Colin Macaw, the Club Steward, and I know that they will appreciate your support in the coming year. I also want to thank Stephen Flannigan for his help with the website www.maheegolf.com and encourage members and visitors to make full use of it.

I can assure you that the new office-bearers and Council will do their best for Mahee in 2012 and I ask all members to do the same.

Happy New Year.

Dear Lady Golfers,

May I wish all our lady members a very enjoyable season’s golf in 2011. I extend a very sincere welcome also to all visitors to Mahee and especially to those who will participate in our open competitions. This year we are introducing for the first time two ladies seniors’ opens, which will be held in June and September. For the first time also in 2011, Mahee will host an open mixed competition on the 3rd Sunday of each month.

Our ladies season started on 7th March with a nine hole Texan Scramble competition followed by a meal and a quiz on the rules of golf. The weather was glorious and I hope this bodes well for rest of the year. I was delighted with the support our ladies showed for this opening competition and would like to encourage all our members, especially new members, to join in the competitions as this is the best way to get to know the other members and enjoy their friendship.

My Lady Captain’s day will be Friday 8th July and our ladies’ outing will be to Rockmount Golf Club on Thursday 18th August.

A special thanks to all our Team Captains who do an excellent job in organising fixtures and teams. I know whether matches are lost or won our ladies will enjoy the competition and the opportunity of playing other courses.

I look forward to working with my Committee throughout the year and especially with our Lady President, Marie Carroll, and our Vice Captain Susie Carnson. The Committee and Office Bearers in particular, have already shown their commitment to making everything run smoothly throughout the year.

On behalf of all the ladies I wish to thank our Caterers, Green Keepers, and Club Stewart who are always helpful and do an excellent job.

Mahee is a beautiful course and every time I arrive at the club I think how privileged I am to be a member there and to play in such lovely and peaceful surroundings.

I wish all our members good health, good golf, good friendships and most importantly the ability to enjoy their golf whatever the score.
