Message from the Captains

Welcome to Mahee.
Mahee Island Golf Club is synonymous with spectacular scenery, an immaculately maintained course and a welcoming, friendly ambience. The first of these was created by nature; the second is nurtured by incredibly dedicated green keepers and the last emanates from a membership that prides itself in being part of the Mahee family. We are very fortunate to enjoy one of the best locations in the country, but the strength of the Club lies, not in nature, but in the people who enjoy the Course, each other’s company and their golf in equal proportions.
So what does this year hold in store for us? Many will dream of continuing good form, a voucher or two and perhaps our name on the prize list at the end of the season. But, to paraphrase JFK, “Ask not what your Club can do for you; ask what you can do for your Club.” Get involved in one of the GUI teams, help with the Juveniles or if there is something that needs doing, just do it. Your Club needs you.
Every Club relies on the dedication of both employees and members to help it develop. We are indebted to the office bearers and members of Council for the time and effort they voluntarily give to help run the Club. We would be lost without the services of Colin, Jean and Mark, and the Course would be nothing without the lavish attentions of Wilson, Alastair and Timothy. We are grateful for all their efforts on our behalf.
Last year’s Captain Robert Wright was, and continues to be, an example to us all. I hope that I can do half as well in 2014 and feel confident of the support of all who make up the family that is Mahee.

Ladies of Mahee,
Thank you very much for giving me the opportunity to be your Captain in 2014. I regard it as an honour, though also a responsibility to have been elected.
It is such a pleasure to play a golf course which is situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty, with views of Strangford Lough and its islands all around. The club is privileged to have excellent greenkeepers, who keep the course in superb condition, a fact mentioned, not only by Mahee members but also by visiting teams and other golfers. This is the first year that we will be playing our second nine holes from New tee boxes. Our course, though not long, is now a lot more interesting and challenging. Many thanks must go to our immediate past Captain Frona Clarke and club officials for all their hard work.
Having been a member for seventeen years, I have been very impressed by the warmth and friendliness of the club members. We take part in a lot of team events, where the quality of golf expertise and and team spirit is very obvious.
I am looking forward very much to working with our Lady President, Jean Rodgers, vice Captain, Kathleen McClements, Yvonne Revill, Secretary, Marie Carroll, competition and handicap Secretary, Heather Gibson, treasurer and members of committee, who together make a great team. We will do our very best to make your year as pleasant and successful as we can,so good golf and have a great year.
